Key Stage 2 Educational Activities

World War II: Evacuee Experience

This workshop provides an opportunity for children to gain an insight into life at the start of the Second World War. The children make a gas mask box and complete a national registration card. They also experience the sound of an air raid siren and falling bombs. They will be evacuated into an Anderson shelter constructed within the confines of our Education Room. At the end of the session children will be able to explore our historic classroom.

World War II: Handling Collection

This session enables the children to handle artefacts associated with WWII. The handling collection is presented to the children who are encouraged to use their senses to interpret objects rather than focusing on their purpose. A worksheet will be provided, including a range of questions the children may want to ask about each object. The children will also have the opportunity to handle and try on historic clothing.

Duration: Approximately 30 minutes.

World War II: Meet the Veterans

A presentation followed by a question and answer session with personnel who experienced the Second World War at first hand.

The Science of Forces & Motion

This workshop is aimed at children in Key Stage 2. It can be used to help teach the science of forces and motion and the skills of scientific enquiry. Schools are able to choose from rockets, rocket cars or buggies. During each workshop children will have the opportunity of working with a variety of materials. For example, children get to design and make a realistic rocket and launch it safely. The rockets are propelled using a unique electrically - controlled compressed air launcher!

Cosford Calculations

The activities are based on the artefacts and aircraft at the Museum forming a numeracy trail where children can use their mathematical skills in a different environment. It is designed to compliment the requirements of the mathematics curriculum and the Primary Framework for Mathematics. All the equipment needed on the day (with the exception of the worksheets) will be supplied by the Museum. These activity sheets can be downloaded from our Resource Material Section.
