Key Stage 3 Educational Activities

Operation Aviation

Our new team building exercise at the Royal Air Force Museum London.

Activity type: Museum staff led workshop
Key Stage: 3 and 4
National Curriculum links: Key stages 3 and 4: Citizenship. (The causes and impact of global warming are also addressed)
Duration: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Cost: £20
Class size: Groups of up to 24 pupils. 3 groups per day.

Handling Collection

Pupils handle and study, in detail, a number of objects and uniform relating to aviation and the Second World War. Attention is drawn to the purpose and design of the objects. Worksheets are provided for students to record their observations.

Document Analysis: Air Power and the First World War

Pupils are able to study a range of World War One documents from the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Air Force. Examples of documents include pilot testimonies and other aircrew along with accounts of the contribution of ground crew and women in the air service.

Document Analysis: The RAF and the Second World War

Pupils are able to study a range of World War Two documents from the Royal Air Force perspective. Examples of documents include pilot testimonies and other air and ground crew along with the experiences of women in the RAF.

Propaganda from the Skies

Pupils study, in detail, propaganda leaflets dropped by the RAF and the Luftwaffe during the Second World War on enemy territories. Leaflets are placed into political and chronological context and attention is drawn to the effectiveness of the propaganda studied. Worksheets are provided for the students.

Aeronauts Interactive Centre

The gallery has over 40 hands on experiments to help students to understand the science of flight. Topics such as air resistance, friction, balances, circuits, light and reflection and G-Forces are covered. Worksheets tailored for Key Stages 3 and 4 are available on this website.

Schools booking other education programmes are timetabled to make a self guided visit to Aeronauts.

Specialised talks and demonstrations can be provided upon request.

Rocket Science

Pupils can design and make a realistic rocket and launch it safely. The rockets are propelled using an electrically controlled compressed air launcher. This workshop can be held indoors or outdoors.

Art

Pupils are welcome to do first-hand observation drawings of our aircraft in the various aircraft halls. However we ask that students use only dry media.

An introduction to the collections on display can be provided by our staff.

A tour of the Museum highlighting some of the aspects of camouflage, nose art and squadron art can also be booked at a cost of £10.

Photography is also allowed throughout the Museum.

Drama

The RAF Museum can provide a number of areas for rehearsal and performance for most types of performance. A trip away will give pupils a chance to explore new performance areas and perhaps perform in front of an audience.

A tour of the Museum can be provided, telling some of the more exciting and unusual stories about the aircraft in the museum. Perfect to provide additional inspiration for writing and performing dramatic interpretations. Tours cost £10.
