The Aerospace Division of the Defence Research Agency, formerly the Royal Aerospace Establishment, Farnborough, is closed.

1 April
Following a study of the Ministry of Defence's headquarters structures conducted by Sir Kenneth Macdonald in 1991, the Prospect Studies, Royal Air Force personnel and logistics staff are removed from London and incorporated with the staff of RAF Support Command to form two new commands:

1 April
The Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) is disbanded. The WRAF is the last of the Service organisations for women to be disbanded, following the dissolution of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) and Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC).

2 June
A Royal Air Force Chinook HC2 helicopter flying from Northern Ireland to Inverness crashes on the Mull of Kintyre killing all 29 passengers and crew.

August
The Royal Air Force's first female fast jet pilot, Flight Lieutenant Jo Salter, is posted No.617 Squadron (Panavia Tornado GR1B) at RAF Lossiemouth.
